Teton Hockey's New Season Kicks Off!
Teton Hockey kicks off a new season this weekend at the University of Jamestown. Coach Bowkus has been leading strong spirited practices and said, "I feel that our compete level has increased over the short amount of time we have been together. Our strength as of right now is the way that our defense have developed. We have some good speed up front with the forwards and expect to generate some scoring chances. Our Goalies are all Freshmen this season and we hope that we will be able to name our #1 after the first few weeks of games."
This year's team consists of 20 players, 5 of which are returners who will be counted on to keep the team focused. Teton Hockey has a diverse group from several different U.S. States, 3 different Canadian provinces, and 1 international player from Austria. There is some local ties as well including 2 from Williston, 2 from Watford City, and 1 from Sidney, Montana. "We hope that we can stay healthy and win some games. We are looking at building a good foundation for the 1st year players so that coming back for second semester will be a much smoother transition."
COVID has affected this season so far but it will not stop the Tetons from getting on the ice. Coach Bowkus said, "We had a couple of concerns about COVID. First our recruiting efforts were diminished as we were unable to go and visit some players that we really had interest in… We have had to postpone some practices earlier in the school year to thwart off some COVID contact issues. Our school president and staff did a great job of not only keeping our athletes safe, but also ensuring that we would be able to have a hockey season."
Following the trip to Jamestown, Teton Hockey returns to the ice in Watford City on October 16th and 17th vs. Minot State. The first home competition in Williston will be October 30th and 31st vs. North Dakota State.
